MOORING BLOCKS

This month 3 divers sponsored by personal donations, Red Monkey divers &  Miri concrete Sdn Bhd started placing semi-permanent mooring blocks,on the most popular dive sites in Miri. Each block weighs 150 Kg and was provided without charge by Miri Concrete S/B.
They were placed by a team of volunteer divers, Pat Banna & Chris Brownell, onto sand adjacent to the reef. the object being to stop the traditional use of mooring ropes on coral bommies or even more damaging methods ( e.g shot or anchor) of keeping a boat in place by the reef.

We plan to extend this idea with more volunteer divers and more blocks. Big thank you from us to Jee Chai from Miri Concrete.

NET CLEARANCE

Red Monkey Divers have provided the logistics and Pat & Chris provided the muscle and skills to remove about 150 metres of fishing net that had become caught on Siwa reef this month. The net had several large fish caught including two cat sharks and a large crab. All dead. "Ghost fishing" by lost nets is a real problem all over the world.
The clearance took about 35 minutes.
